Frequently Asked Questions

Can Namkaran be performed after the 12th day?

Yes, if the 11th or 12th day falls on an inauspicious day, the ceremony can be deferred to a later auspicious date. There is no strict deadline beyond tradition.

How is the rashi akshar determined for naming?

The rashi akshar (starting letter) is determined by the nakshatra at the time of birth. For example, a child born under Rohini nakshatra would have names starting with O, Va, Vi, or Ve.

Is a pandit required for Namkaran?

Traditionally yes, a pandit performs the Namkaran puja. However, many families today do a simplified ceremony with family elders. The key moment is when the name is first formally spoken.
