Muharram / Ashura: Date, Significance and Source Details

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic Hijri (lunar) calendar. It is considered one of the four sacred months, and the tenth day — Ashura — holds deep spiritual significance. For Shia Muslims, Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali at the Battle of Karbala (680 CE). For Sunni Muslims, Ashura is also a day of fasting in remembrance of Prophet Moses and the crossing of the Red Sea. Both communities observe the day with prayer and reflection.

The Islamic Hijri calendar began in 622 CE with Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina. Muharram has held sacred status since then. The events of Karbala in 680 CE (61 AH) — when Imam Hussain ibn Ali and his companions were martyred — gave the day of Ashura additional significance for Shia Muslims worldwide.
