About Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is a major Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The festival spans 10 days, beginning on the Chaturthi (fourth day) of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada and concluding with the immersion (Visarjan) of Ganesha idols on Anant Chaturdashi. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm across India, particularly in Maharashtra, and involves the installation of clay Ganesha idols in homes and public pandals.
Story Associated with Ganesh Chaturthi
Lord Ganesha is revered as Vighnaharta β the remover of obstacles β and is associated with wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. In Hindu tradition, he is worshipped at the beginning of any important undertaking. He is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
The celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi as a public festival gained prominence in Maharashtra, particularly through the efforts of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak in the late 19th century, who used it as a platform for community gatherings. Today it is celebrated across India with large public pandals and home installations.
The 10-day festival begins with the installation of a Ganesha idol and concludes on Anant Chaturdashi with the Visarjan β the ritual immersion of the idol in water, symbolising the return of Lord Ganesha to his abode on Mount Kailash.
